The best person to talk to might not exist, and that's okay

"I never knew anyone who went crazy before, except for my imaginary friend Captain Sprock!" - Chris Griffin, Family Guy

Here's a quick tip: when you're struggling to reach a decision, imagine that a friend is asking you the question you want answered. You can use a real friend for this but I prefer to use an imaginary friend as they generally come with less luggage. Sometimes this helps change your mindset, and distance yourself just enough from the problem, that you can come up with a solution.

  1. Oooo. How interesting. Does an imaginary friend come with less luggage or is it just familiar luggage (i.e. similar to yours)?
In other words are you simply re-enforcing your own cognitive biases instead of exposing yourself to unfamiliar ones?
There is no easy way to reach a decision and no way to guarantee that however carefully you consider it, a decision will prove to be the right one.
the worst thing possible is not to make a decision and to endlessly procrastinate for fear of getting it wrong.
Better to make the wrong decision and go back and correct it than to sit on it for so long you end up being paralysed by indecision.

    1. Good question! I normally use this technique to reach the hard answers; the ones I don't want to admit to myself. Using an imaginary friend is sometimes all that it takes to admit the truth.

It's a very good tip to actually make decisions, rather than fretting about them too long.
